This listing is for a digital pdf that includes a full guide of how I create pottery illustrations. Includinh prep work, list of materials, glaze techniques etc. The pdf will be emailed to you after purchase.

Going from illustrating on paper to illustrating on pottery can be challenging. You may be very happy with your illustration before it goes in the kiln, just to find most of your color has burned off (or the opposite; become so saturated that it overpowers the illustration). At least, this is what I found would happen frequently when I started my pottery illustration journey. It took me many attempts before I was able to find a way of using decorative ceramic materials in order to create illustrations with consistent results. This journey included trying pretty much every ceramic pencil and underglaze on the market, and test how they fare on different clays.

This “guide” is designed to function as a shortcut, so you can avoid the.mistakes I had to make to reach the point of (mostly - this is ceramics afterall ;)) achieving consistent results. The tips herein will particularly help you create pottery illustrations that have that warm, storybook like environment of pencil and watercolor illustrations.

With that said, my hope is that this guide first and foremost is a push to use a wonderful ceramic material - underglaze pencils - which I believe are under-utilized in most potters tool belts; and to eventually go beyond this first step and experiment further with these materials.

Having created custom companion animal sculptures and pottery for the past three years, I know many of us love owning artwork (in particular, functional artwork such as mugs) of our furry babies. With that in mind, I have designed this guide especially for the creation of animal illustrations - but most of the tips in this pdf are applicable to ceramic illustrations independent of what motif it is you would like to illustrate. In other words, there’s plenty of room to play around, so don’t feel like you need to be restricted to animal illustrations.

Once you've placed an order, I'll email the pdf file to you♥️

Good luck and happy pottery illustrations!!!
